Nuku’alofa, TONGA- Questions are mounting over the number of people who travelled from Tonga to Australia to watch Tonga’s rugby league clash against England last Saturday, with growing calls for transparency over the possible use of public funds.

Reporting based on coverage by 88.1 FM – Letio ‘a e Kakai Tonga, featured in its morning news programme with reporters Tapinga Lavemaau and Etuate Lavulavu, raising questions about the number of travellers, the potential cost to taxpayers, and the need for official clarification and financial accountability.

Estimates suggest that more than 30 people may have travelled to attend the match. However, the exact number of travellers, the funding sources and the total cost of the trip remain unconfirmed.

The public is seeking clear answers from the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance on whether taxpayer money was used to finance the trip and, if so, how much was spent.

Key questions remain: How many people travelled? What was the total expenditure on airfares, accommodation, meals, transport and other associated costs? Which government budget allocations, if any, funded the trip? Who were the travellers, and what official responsibilities or justification supported their participation?

The public is also seeking details of the financial records and approvals governing the expenditure.

At the heart of the issue is not merely the number of people who attended the match, but whether any public funds involved were properly authorised, prudently spent and fully accounted for.

If taxpayer money was used, the public is entitled to know how much was spent, who benefited, the purpose of the expenditure and what national interest justified the use of public resources.

The question remains: Will the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance provide a full account of the cost of Tonga’s rugby league tour to Australia?
