On Tuesday 7th July 2026, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) lifted the suspension on Russia and allowed Russia to register anew their athletes to participate in the Olympic games set to take place at Los Angeles, US in 2028.
The IOC suspended Russia in October 2023 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, banning them from being involved in the IOC’s committee or the participation of their athletes in international events.
However, Kristy Coventry, president of the IOC, stated in a press conference that the reintegration of Russia does not mean that the IOC supports nor condone war or violence at any level. She further stated that political conflicts involving a government should not restrict an athlete’s ability to compete internationally, acknowledging the complicated nature and impact of modern global politics. Despite rising global tensions and warfare, the IOC needs to maintain its commitment to a principled, worldwide sports system that offers global hope.
Meanwhile, Russia welcomes the reintegration of their athletes to international competing events. During the banned period, Russia’s athlete competed in international events as ‘neutral athletes’, meaning, they are unable to represent their country. alamy.com
