NUKUʻALOFA, TONGA — Exclusive findings by 88.1 FM- Letio ae Kakai Tonga morning news segment reported TOP$80,000 in government credit-card expenditure without receipts, raising questions about corruption and financial accountability during the 2021–2024 administration.
The findings, attributed to the Auditor General’s 2024 special report, raise questions about whether the expenditure was properly documented, authorised and used for legitimate government purposes.
Where are the receipts, and what was the money spent on?
Government expenditure must be supported by adequate records to demonstrate how public funds were used. If documentation is missing or insufficient, auditors may be unable to verify the transactions.
The former Prime Minister’s administration and the Ministry of Finance should clarify what the expenditure covered, whether supporting documents exist and what action has been taken to resolve the audit concerns.
For taxpayers, the issue is straightforward: who authorised the spending, how was the money used, and can the government account for every dollar?
If more than TOP$80,000 in government credit-card spending remains unexplained, who will be held accountable, and how can taxpayers trust a system that cannot clearly account for public money?
The findings raise questions about fraud and personaly wrongdoing which may have led to the former PM resigning in December 2024 after his fellow members of parliament submitted a VONC (vote of no confidence).
Without adequate records, taxpayers are left seeking answers about how public funds were used and whether the expenditure was properly accounted for.
The issue also raises questions about transparency under the current administration. How much has the sitting Prime Minister charged to Government credit or Visa cards for overseas travel between January and October 2026?
Taxpayers have a legitimate interest in knowing the cost of official travel, the purpose of the expenditure, and whether all transactions are supported by proper documentation.
Public money demands public accountability, regardless of who holds office.
