NUKU’ALOFA: WEDNESDAY 15 JULY,2026–
The Ministry of Health has officially welcomed the arrival of the 7th Chinese Medical Team to the Kingdom of Tonga during a ceremony attended by the Minister for Health, Hon. Hu’akavameiliku, Chief Executive Officer for Health Dr Reynold ‘Ofanoa, and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Tonga, His Excellency Liu Weimin.
The occasion also marked the farewell of the 6th Chinese Medical Team, whose members have completed their medical mission in Tonga after providing specialist healthcare services across a range of disciplines.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Ministry acknowledged the outgoing team’s professionalism, dedication, and compassionate service, noting that their contributions have strengthened Tonga’s healthcare system and positively impacted the lives of many patients and families.
The Ministry also expressed its appreciation to the Government of the People’s Republic of China for its continued support through the long-standing medical cooperation programme, which has enabled specialist medical expertise to be made available to the people of Tonga.
The outgoing 6th Chinese Medical Team includes:
- Dr Zhang Gaofeng – Anesthesiologist
- Dr Zhang Jian – Orthopedic Specialist
- Dr Wang Xiaocong – Pathologist
- Dr Zhang Tao – Gynecologist
- Dr Kong Xiangchong – Ultrasound Specialist
- Dr Chen Manman – Psychiatrist
Joining Tonga as members of the 7th Chinese Medical Team are:
- Dr Sun Xiaopeng – Anesthesiologist
- Dr You Huizeng – Otolaryngologist (ENT)
- Dr Zhao Keqin – Traditional Chinese Medicine Specialist
- Dr Zhou Xiao – Gynecologist
- Dr Yu Shengwen – Orthopedic Surgeon
- Dr Yuan Xin – Ultrasonographer
- Dr Chen Yunqing – Pathologist
- Dr Gu Hanxing – Psychiatrist
- Dr Jiang Kuo – Public Health Physician
The Ministry thanked the outgoing medical team for their outstanding service, friendship, and commitment to improving healthcare in Tonga, wishing them continued success in their future endeavours.
The incoming team was warmly welcomed to the Kingdom, with the Ministry expressing confidence that their expertise will further strengthen healthcare services while continuing the enduring friendship and cooperation between Tonga and the People’s Republic of China.
