There is a variations of wages in Tonga in comparison to the risks that comes with the nature of the job.
Security Guarding jobs pays at $2.00 per hour to $5.00 per hour for those at supervising positions. However according, workers of security guarding businesses, these wages does not reflect the danger often encountered in this type of work. There are times when their lives are at risks due to people they come face to face with that are armed with either sharp objects such as knives, or with guns threatening them. All the while, they are not provided with protective gear to safe guard themselves or use to defend themselves.
Compare security guarding jobs to man employed as a group at plantations, there is a great variations of wages. Group workers hired by farmers starts at $10.00 per hour and at some areas, it is $15.00 or $20.00 per hour. These wages reflects the man power utilized and the hour of the day when they are required to work.
The public here are raising the issue of the status of Tonga’s Employment Relation Bill of 2020. This bill was passed by the Legislative Assembly and has been submitted to the Privy Council for the King’s approval in 2020.
The people of the Kingdom needs an employment act to be enacted to properly govern salaries and wages in consideration of the nature of each job and state minimum wages for Tonga.
An Act as such will not only govern minimum wages but will also cover alot of other areas at the work place including protecting the rights of the employee or worker. But this will all depend on when such a law will be enacted.
