For more than 40 years, Australian medical specialists have travelled to Tonga to provide life-changing healthcare, building lasting connections between the two countries and strengthening their longstanding friendship.
This week, a medical team from Interplast Australia & New Zealand is working alongside Tongan doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to deliver specialist surgery and rehabilitation services.
His Excellency Australian High Commissioner Brek Batley joined the Minister for Health, Hon. Dr Siale ʻAkauola, at Vaiola Hospital to meet members of the visiting medical team and spend time with patients and their families.
The collaboration highlights the continuing partnership between Australian and Tongan health professionals, with specialist teams providing vital medical services while also working alongside local healthcare workers to strengthen skills and support patient care.
The visit continues a relationship spanning more than four decades, during which Australian specialists have supported healthcare services in Tonga and helped change the lives of many patients and families.
