Nuku’alofa, Tonga — A petition challenging the leadership of Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua has been formally submitted to His Majesty King Tupou VI, with a growing number of young Tongans among those supporting calls for greater fairness, accountability and transparency in government.
The petition was delivered to the Royal Palace Office in Nuku’alofa on Monday, 24 August 2026, and was formally received and registered by the King’s Secretariat at 4:37pm.
The submission is understood to contain approximately 80 pages, together with supporting documents and evidence relating to the concerns raised by the petitioners.
Organisers said more than 500 signatures had already been collected, with further signatures expected from Tongans living overseas and throughout the outer islands.
An ambitious target of up to 50,000 signatures, combining support from people in Tonga and the Tongan diaspora. The petition already includes 188 electronic signatures from Hawai‘i.
Major Grounds for the Petition
The petition states that its central purpose is to express deep dissatisfaction with the performance of the Prime Minister.
Among the issues raised are allegations that promises made during the December 2025 parliamentary process to establish a Cabinet of National Unity were not fulfilled, as well as concerns over statements regarding the proposed sale of Tongan passports.
The petition also challenges statements allegedly made at a June 2026 press conference concerning the signing of a contract connected to the Fanga’uta Lagoon Brigdge project.
Other major concerns involve the Matatoa land transaction and a reported TOP$58.1 million Tonga Power Limited loan, with petitioners alleging that constitutional and land-law requirements may have been breached.
Further allegations concern the handling of land records and transactions connected to Fanga’uta Bridge project, including claims of improper documentation, signatures and failures to follow provisions of the Land Act. Including a plea from a distressed widow – Mesia Fauolo and the Fauolo familty facing injustice in land arrangements proposed due to decisions made by Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua.
The petition also questions the Prime Minister’s management of multiple ministerial portfolios and alleges that the concentration of responsibilities has contributed to poor governance, confusion and reluctance among some officials to challenge government decisions.
A further ground concerns the treatment of the media, including the exclusion of journalists from Prime Ministerial press conferences in August. Petitioners argue that such actions restrict the media’s ability to question the Government on matters of significant public interest.
Youth support grows
The involvement of young people has emerged as an important feature of the petition, with a number of young Tongans now adding their names to the call for what they describe as fairer and more accountable leadership.
The organisers say the petition is intended to give both people in Tonga and Tongans overseas an opportunity to express their concerns through a collective submission to His Majesty.
The petition is now before the Palace following its formal registration.
As additional signatures continue to be gathered, the petition could become a significant expression of public concern over the direction of the Government under Lord Fakafanua’s leadership.
