The Media Association of Tonga (MAT) has concluded a successful week of specialized in-house training for broadcasting media organisations across the Kingdom, led by BBC Media Action and accredited trainer Vijay Narayan of Fiji Village.
Journalists and broadcasters from a range of media organisations, including Tonga Chronicle Newspaper and People’s Radio 88.1 FM, participated in the programme, which was designed to strengthen professional journalism and broadcasting standards.
The training focused on “Crafting and the Foundation of Talk Show Hosting,” covering key areas such as ethical journalism, editorial planning, audience-centered content, and the safe and responsible reporting of sensitive issues. The in-house format provided each newsroom with the opportunity to openly discuss its unique challenges while identifying practical strategies to strengthen its operations and content.
As part of the week’s programme, BBC Media Action hosted an Editors’ Roundtable and a Women in Media working lunch, where participants discussed current issues affecting the media industry and explored opportunities for future collaboration and support from BBC Media Action.
Building on the success of the training, the Media Association of Tonga says it is committed to ongoing engagement with local newsrooms through mentoring, content development, and further professional development initiatives aimed at enhancing the skills and capacity of Tonga’s media practitioners.
