Secure Fencing for Hu’atolitoli Prison- Safer Community

Public concern has intensified following the second reported escape of an inmate from His Majesty’s Prison in Faone, Ha’apai, prompting renewed discussion about prison security and infrastructure.

Among the questions being raised by members of the public are whether the escape may be linked to the condition of prison facilities, the adequacy of perimeter fencing, or staffing levels at the correctional facility. At this stage, these concerns remain matters of public discussion and have not been confirmed by prison authorities.

While the Tonga Chronicle has not yet been able to secure an interview with His Majesty’s Prison Commissioner, Laini Koula Manuofetoa, it can confirm that security upgrades are underway at His Majesty’s Hu’atolitoli Prison in Vaini, Tongatapu.

For many years, the prison’s perimeter was enclosed by a traditional hedge fence, commonly known as tanetane. Members of the public and visitors have often viewed the boundary as offering limited physical separation between inmates and the surrounding community, with some expressing concerns about the ease of interaction across the fence.

Those concerns are expected to be addressed through the construction of a new high-security perimeter wall. The upgraded boundary consists of a reinforced concrete block wall standing approximately 10 feet (3 metres) high, topped with around 2 metres of steel security fencing and an additional metre of barbed wire.

The new security infrastructure marks a significant upgrade from the former hedge boundary, which, in some areas, allowed inmates to communicate with members of the public. Once completed, the project is expected to strengthen security at Hu’atolitoli Prison and reduce opportunities for unauthorised contact between inmates and the public.
