NUKUʻALOFA — Tonga has secured approval for US$14.98 million in climate funding to strengthen national resilience against the growing impacts of climate change, with water security, agriculture and community adaptation among the key priorities.

The funding was approved by the Adaptation Fund Board at its 47th meeting in Bonn, Germany, on 23 October 2026, following a proposal submitted through the Government of Tonga and the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC).

The six-year initiative aims to strengthen climate resilience across the Kingdom while supporting the Tonga Climate Change Fund (TCCF), providing resources for communities facing increasing environmental and climate-related challenges.

According to the Government’s announcement, the project will focus on improving water security, developing climate-resilient infrastructure, supporting sustainable agriculture and expanding community-led adaptation initiatives.

A significant component will involve strengthening and capitalising the Tonga Climate Change Fund, with approximately US$10.3 million expected to be directed towards the Fund.

The initiative is intended to ensure that climate finance is not only secured internationally but also translated into practical projects and support for communities across Tonga.

Water security and climate-resilient agriculture are particularly important as the Kingdom faces the combined pressures of changing rainfall patterns, drought risks, rising temperatures and threats to food production.

For farmers, households and vulnerable communities, access to reliable water supplies, improved infrastructure and sustainable agricultural practices will be essential in preparing for future climate conditions.

The Government acknowledged the Adaptation Fund Board, the Pacific Community (SPC), national stakeholders and development partners for their contributions to securing the funding.

While the approval represents a significant milestone in Tonga’s efforts to access international climate finance, the impact of the six-year programme will ultimately depend on how the funding is managed, distributed and converted into measurable improvements for communities.

Key questions will include how projects are selected, which communities will benefit, how the Tonga Climate Change Fund will be governed and what mechanisms will ensure transparency and accountability in the use of the money.

For Tonga, the challenge now moves beyond securing climate finance to ensuring that the funding reaches the people and communities most exposed to climate change.

The US$14.98 million approval marks a major funding milestone. Its lasting success will be measured by the resilience it delivers on the ground.
